The CHOICE Institute and Truveta’s partnership aims to advance health economics and outcomes research (HEOR), driving improvements in patient care and medical research for diverse populations.

The Comparative Health Outcomes, Policy, and Economics (CHOICE) Institute at the University of Washington’s School of Pharmacy has announced a strategic partnership with Truveta, a leader in real-world data (RWD) analytics. This collaboration aims to enhance HEOR by leveraging Truveta’s comprehensive electronic health record (EHR) data to advance patient care and medical research.

Truveta’s platform will provide the CHOICE Institute with access to an extensive array of real-world EHR data, encompassing over 100 million patients from 30 U.S. health systems. This data, sourced from more than 900 hospitals and 20,000 clinics, offers researchers a representative and timely view of patient care across both inpatient and outpatient settings. With daily updates, researchers can explore the complete patient journey, including clinical notes and medical images, facilitating studies on the comparative and cost-effectiveness of various therapies and outcomes across diverse populations.

Globally recognized for its contributions to HEOR, the CHOICE Institute will leverage Truveta’s data to generate insights across multiple therapeutic areas. These include chronic conditions such as diabetes, dementia, sickle cell disease, cystic fibrosis, and hepatitis C. Furthermore, researchers will examine the intersection of health policy, chronic disease management, and cognition, as well as the value of care for conditions influencing healthy aging, vaccination strategies, antibiotic use, and patient reimbursement practices.

“Truveta offers a curated, regulatory-grade EHR database that covers almost a third of Americans. We are excited to partner with them and position our team to conduct a wide range of advanced research across health economics, outcomes, and comparative effectiveness,” said Anirban Basu, PhD, Stergachis Family Endowed Director, and Professor of Health Economics at the CHOICE Institute.

Truveta’s platform, which has earned certifications for its security and privacy standards, offers powerful tools for the CHOICE Institute’s research. Through Truveta Studio, researchers can rapidly revise study designs, modify inclusion and exclusion criteria in real-time, and conduct studies inclusive of underrepresented communities and those with rare diseases. This flexibility is essential for ensuring precise and representative research outcomes.

“We are honored to partner with an innovative academic research organization like The CHOICE Institute, working toward a shared mission of saving lives with data,” said Truveta Chief Medical Officer and Co-founder Ryan Ahern, MD, MPH. “Through the power of real-world data, we can unlock critical patient insights to researchers, enabling important health economic and outcomes research to advance medicine and improve patient care.”
